I am looking into using 2checkout, but I was wondering how it works and if anyone has really ever used it before.

No I haven't but I have used Google checkout and Paypal and have had no problems at all.

Yes, I used 2checkout about three years back. At first it was confusing, but they were very quick to help me with all of my setup needs. At that time it was terrific for my site because they took care of accepting credit cards, et cetera. Now, I must admit that I didn't like having to wait to have funds disbursed, but it actually was good. With the waiting time, if someone returned an item, my liability was minimized. When you first start a small business, the temptation can be great to utilize the funds right away to buy more supplies, et cetera. Then, if you get returns, well, you have to go into your pocket to return the funds. I had a very good experience with them.
